The MOOC factory:

In this module we will share the EPFL experience: our investments in technological infrastructure, staff hiring and changing teaching culture. We discuss our lessons learned, including major opportunities and challenging bottlenecks when setting up our MOOC production capability.


Visit to studio’s:

This visit will show you the design and operations of our MOOC production studios.


Customer experience:

Hear our clients’ testimonies about developing a MOOC in our production facilities. Representatives from WHO and EAWAG will tell their story.


Thinking about MOOCs: Types and Targets:

Not all MOOCs are created equal. What’s the goal of the MOOCs initiative? Experiment with teaching? Exposure? Making money? For each objective, what is the target audience and why should they care? How to choose the right subjects for the right audience?


Marketing and branding:

MOOCs live in a global digital marketplace, and therefore compete with other digital products and services. This is not a natural environment for academic institutions; it’s a huge challenge to compete against fast-moving and/or better-funded competitors. However, a MOOCs initiative can also act as a catalyst for marketing and branding innovation within our own institutions.


Evolution from classroom lectures to MOOCs:

What’s the same and what’s different; What it means to offer classroom lectures in the form of MOOCs. How people perceive MOOCs, what motivates them to register, what creates a good learning experience, and what are the main challenges in terms of reaching a large audience and capturing their interest.

Professors and Course Developers Modules.

Course Design:

This module is about translating learning goals into online activities. We will present a tool that helps to schedule your course, structure all assignments, video lectures, quizzes and additional materials. You will work on designing your own course.


Media training:

The media training module will prepare you for presenting successfully in front of the camera.


Slides preparation for video lectures:

In this module we will discuss the specific requirements for slides for video lectures, the opportunities for annotating while presenting, and how to integrate different media to tell your story.


Testing and assignment:

A module focused on different aspects of (online) testing and assignments. We will present some basics from test design, ideas on online proctoring and external graders, peer assessment techniques and game based testing.


Discover EdX and Coursera:

A workshop on the opportunities of MOOC platforms: what can you do with sessions, cohorts. fora, assignments, tests, video and additional materials. How to integrate games, graders, maps and  other external content.


Recording video:

In this workshop we will make an actual recording of a mini lecture that you have prepared. You will experience what is involved in working in the recording studio, how that changes your presentation style, and what opportunities the studio provides you.


Copyrights and IP:

The copyrights of materials that you present in classroom are different than copyrights on materials used in online presentations. We will discuss different models for copyright and other subjects: What does it mean, Open learning? Who has rights to the materials that you make? What happens to revenues?


From blueprint to platform:

In this workshop we will demonstrate and support you to translate the blueprint of your course to online content on the platform.


Big Data and course design:

This module shows you how to incorporate big data analyses in your course design. When students take MOOCs, we have access to their browser activity, demographics data, location data, and in some cases personal data. This allows us to analyze precisely how students react in each element of the course, how each element contributes to the engagement and performance of each student.


Flipping the classroom:

Learn from our students and teachers. In this module some of EPFL best teachers and their students will share their story, discuss their experiences.

Technical Specialist Modules.

Production studio:

In this module we will present the technical specification and construction of the EPFL MOOC studios, the scale of production, the production values, and the concept of scalable studio infrastructures.


Production workflow:

From pre-production to production and postproduction, in this module you will learn everything about the exploitation of the MOOC studios.


360 video:

A special module on the opportunities and technical requirements of 360 video: recording, , editing, value for online learning.


Setting up the data pipeline:

A MOOCs data pipeline needs to handle data collection, parsing, storage, and visualisation. Since each platform uses a mix of different technologies to generate their data, a data analyst must become familiar with a breadth of technologies (shell scripting, data mining, database management, visualization libraries, etc), as well as basic knowledge of math and statistics.


Setting up the Storage and Editing Pipeline:

In this module we will present the structure and specifications for media storage and setting up the editing pipeline.


Video recording workshop:

In this workshop the technical participants will run the video recording sessions of the course developers. Thus, it will provide you with hands on experience with conducting recording sessions.


Video editing workshop:

In this workshop you will be working on editing the materials that you have recorded earlier. Using EPFL editing facilities and under supervision of our experienced video editors, you can discover how your creativity increase the learning value of video lectures.


How to visualize and report MOOCs data:

Depending on the target audience, the form in which data is presented is critical to people’s perception of the results. Therefore, knowledge of statistical methods, data visualization techniques, and the psychological effects of different design choices, are important considerations for the person responsible for data analytics.


MOOCs Big Data:

The data collected from MOOCs is relevant to people in different ways. Management requires impactful numbers that justify the creation of a MOOCs program. Teachers require data about students’ engagement and performance. Researchers require detailed data of students’ browsing, so they can discover the way people learn.
